Welcome! Farmingsafelynearschools.com is part of a model communications network designed to notify the Monterey County school communities of Ohlone Elementary and Pajaro Middle School in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, Hall District Elementary and the North Monterey County Unified School District before a fumigant is applied on a farm within a quarter of a mile from school grounds. This website was developed to provide parents, teachers, students, school employees and the community with information about fumigant use on farmland adjacent to these schools.
The communications notification network is a pilot project undertaken by the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office with funding provided by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. The pilot project is the first of its kind in the nation. Currently the website includes information about:
- Fumigant regulations in place to ensure safety
- Maps of the ten schools within the pilot project and neighboring farms
- A system that will send an email or text notification to parents, teachers and community members prior to a fumigant application near a pilot project school.
