Personally I'd rather have a good old fashioned talking head lecture me than have false badly 'acted' conversations that would never have happened without a camera and an audience. 7 of 10 people found this review helpful. Your email address will not be published.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 12, 2020, I have a large collection of photography dvd. Great documentary.
On a personal taste level I wish the doc might have gone for less breadth and more depth. It doesn't seem, however, that he felt sorry for himself. by MAPPLETHORPE: LOOK AT THE PICTURES (MOD). In 1989, on the floor of Congress, Senator Jesse Helms implored America to "Look at the pictures," while denouncing the controversial art of Robert Mapplethorpe, whose photographs pushed social boundaries with their frank depictions of nudity, sexuality and fetishism – … This seemed a bit judgemental of a dead person but it was educational and informative. Mapplethorpe’s work was highly dual, the film also reveals. After viewing product detail pages, look here to find an easy way to navigate back to pages you are interested in. I appreciated getting to see so much of his work, and having more of a context of his life story to put them in. While Mapplethorpe's work is not for everyone, due to mature subject matter, if you're aware of that and want to learn more about his life then this film is highly recommended. It's funny how time, internet porn, etc has somewhat dulled the shock of his hyper-explicit gay S+M photos, but while that might have distressed Mapplethorpe, who clearly loved playing the provocateur, it makes it easier to look at his terrific of body of work as a whole, neither excluding or obsessing over the sexual images, but integrating them. I was intrigued by the scenes of the Mineshaft night club, where Mapplethorpe met many of the men who appeared in his photographs that dealt with S&M. Please try again.
Over the top, of course. He is also celebrity and fashion-driven, just like some of the gay world. He depicted sexuality in graphic detail with a flare and candidness rarely seen before. Always absorbing doc on the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The difference is that, in the case of Mapplethorpe, people were very much aware of his tragic predicament throughout. Tracey Emin replies: "Well, I did it and I'm an artist, so it must be." And having these learned art scholars ask each other questions and tell each other things that they clearly all already know feels a bit dishonest and a touch dorky.
I did like that the film neither lionizes nor demonizes Mapplethorpe as a human being. The documentary examines Mapplethorpe’s obstinate, manipulative and career-driven personality, from his early days living, through his rapid rise to fame until his Aids-related death in 1989. I enjoyed watching this documentary.
